Her first novel, The Nightingale Girls, set in a hospital in 1930s East London, was an immediate success, and ten more novels in the series followed. Books were a luxury in her family, and trips to the library a rare treat, but she drew inspiration from watching storytellers on the TV show Jackanory, and from the girls' adventure comics her grandmother brought home from her cleaning job at the local newsagents. She was born in Wandsworth, south London, where she first began making up stories while perched on top of the back yard coal shed.
