Living in Queens, N.Y., with her family, she had originally planned a lavish ceremony but had to cut back some because her father was unemployed and her friends could not afford the desired outfits. Monica, the main young woman Alvarez follows, is a fairly prototypical portrait of the quince candidate. The case histories presented here depict young women who are both optimistic and jaded, naive and sadly adult in their perspectives. In fact, as she continued to attend the extravagant celebrations for her research, she began to see them as a way to mark the young women's passages into adulthood, to remind them of their community and possibilities.

Yet Alvarez, who as a teenager participated in a group-style cotillion in the Dominican Republic, doesn't dismiss the significance of the event.
